Grief, Loss & Bereavement Counselling

Support for Grief, Loss & Bereavement

Grief is a deeply individual response to loss. Although bereavement following a death is one of the most recognised forms of grief, people can also grieve relationships, health, identity, important roles, anticipated futures and other significant changes in life. There is no single correct way to grieve and no fixed timeline that determines when someone should have “moved on.” As a Certified Thanatologist and Certified Grief Therapist, I work with clients experiencing different forms of grief and loss.
Individual Counseling
Bereavement & Grief
Following the death of someone significant, you may experience sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, longing, confusion or many different emotions at different times.
Counselling provides a space to talk about both the person who died and the impact their absence has had on your life. [ENQUIRE ABOUT GRIEF & BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING]
Traumatic Grief
When a death is sudden, unexpected or traumatic, grief may become intertwined with the distress surrounding how the person died.
Therapy may therefore involve attending to both the experience of the loss and the traumatic aspects associated with it.
Couple Counseling
Family Counseling
Prolonged or Complicated Grief
Sometimes grief remains intensely disruptive for a prolonged period and it can become difficult to reconnect with everyday life, relationships or a sense of meaning.
Therapy can provide space to understand what may be keeping the grief particularly painful while supporting adaptation to life following the loss.
Anticipatory Grief
Grief can also begin before a death or loss occurs.
Individuals and families facing serious or life-limiting illness may experience fear, sadness, uncertainty, guilt and a gradual sense of loss while simultaneously coping with the demands of the present.

How Grief Therapy May Support You

Our work may involve:
- Making space for emotions that may feel difficult to express elsewhere- Understanding the particular meaning of the loss to you- Exploring guilt, regret, anger or unresolved experiences- Processing distressing or traumatic aspects of the loss- Adjusting to changes in roles, relationships and identity- Finding ways to maintain a meaningful connection with what or whom you have lost- Gradually reconstructing meaning and a sense of direction in life
Sometimes the work is about learning how to live with what has changed while gradually finding a way to engage with life again.

What Grief Counselling Can Help With
  • Making Sense of Difficult Emotions
  • Grief can involve sadness, anger, guilt, regret, numbness, relief, longing and many other emotions — sometimes at the same time.

  • Counselling provides a space to explore these feelings without having to minimise them or worry about how they may affect the people around you. Guilt, Regret & Unfinished Experiences
  • After a loss, people often revisit what they said, what they did not say, decisions that were made or moments they wish had happened differently.

  • Therapy can help you explore guilt and regret with greater context and compassion, including experiences that may feel unfinished or unresolved. Identity & Life After Loss
  • Significant loss can change the roles we occupy and how we understand ourselves.
  • You may find yourself asking:
  • "Who am I now that this person or part of my life is gone?"

  • Grief counselling can support you in adjusting to these changes while gradually rebuilding a sense of identity and direction. Meaning Reconstruction
  • Some losses fundamentally change the assumptions we previously held about life, relationships, fairness, safety and the future.

  • Meaning reconstruction does not mean trying to find something positive in a painful experience.

  • Instead, it involves gradually making sense of what the loss means in the context of your life, maintaining a meaningful connection with what or whom you have lost, and finding ways to continue living while carrying that connection with you.
